Enjoy 11 days safari of discovering Mountains of the Moon (Rwenzori Hiking)

Day 1: KAMPALA-FORT PORTAL

You will be welcomed by a representative of Winners’ Safaris at Entebbe Airport. From here you will be transferred to Fort Portal Town. Lunch, Dinner and overnight at Mountains of the Moon Hotel.

DAY 2: FORT PORTAL-NYAKALENGIJJA- NYABITABA

Have an early breakfast and transfer to Nyakalengija (1646 meters) where you will start your climb into the mountains. The hike takes you along the Mubuku river that makes a sweet sound of nature and through thick equatorial vegetation before arriving at the Nyabitaba hut (2650 meters). If you lucky, you might hear sounds of nature from chimpanzees or monkeys or even see them eating in their natural habitat. Total hiking time: 5-7 hours (dependant on some factors) and here we shall be at 1200 meters. Dinner and overnight in Nyabitaba hut

Day 3: NYABITABA TO JOHN MATTE HUT

After early breakfast you continue with the journey and descend down from the moraine through the Kurt Sharfer Bridge to marvel at the sparkling Mubuku river confluence, then a phenomenal hike through bamboo and trees coated with moss and ferns to the John Matte hut (3415 meters). Total hiking 915 meters in 7 hours (dependant on some factors). Dinner and Overnight John Matte Hut.

Day 4: JOHN MATTE HUT TO BUJUKU HUT

Depart early through the giant Lobelias and heath trees. You ascend to the Bigo Bog and scenic landscape of lobelias and giant groundsels. You will pass lake Bujuku, majestically settled between the famous mountains. Continue to a rock shelter known as the Cooking Pot and you will soon arrive at your final stop over for today. Take time and relax before Dinner and overnight at the Bujuku Hut (3960 meters). Total hiking time: 3-5 hours (dependant on some factors) Ascent: 560 meters. . Some fast hikers do the approach and peak ascent on the same day

Day 5: BUJUKU HUT TO ELENA HUT

Wake up early today ready to move to the Elena Hut, which once was beside the Elena Glacier at 4540 meters. It takes several hours to make the steep ascent. One portion of the climb is actually up a prolonged ladder (Groundsel Gully). Just past this point, there is a wonderful vantage point to survey the valley. The top portion of the climb is on steep moss covered slabs. The view from the hut is usually of fog but can be spectacular if the weather clears with the Portal Peaks and Mt. Baker prominent, as well as an impressive view of the Coronation Glacier on Mt. Stanley. In many ways the crux of the climbing can be navigating ice coated ledges from the hut to the outhouse in the middle of the night.

Day 6: ELENA TO ALEXANDRA/MARGHERITA

You may also the many people who prefer using this day to climb Mt. Stanley by ascending up steep often wet/verglassed slabs to the Elena Glacier and the Stanley Plateau, Africa’s largest ice field. Depending on the conditions there are several possible lines that can be used and here, one has good access to the excellent SE ridge of Alexandra Peak. You can also cross to the Stanley Plateau to the north to reach the tow of Alexandra’s SE Ridge, drop down a steep gully to the Margherita Glacier, ascend this to the Alexandra/Margherita Col then from here climb to the summit of Margherita Peak the snow capped peak. At the summit, make sure to step to the West of the sign to enter yet another country on the African Planet the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Day 7: ALEXANDRA/MARGHERITA TO GUY YEOMAN HUT

Climb over Fresh field Pass (300 meters elevation gain) then descend to the Guy Yeoman Hut (3500 m). From near the pass you can also take some time and climb Mt. Baker or Mt. Liugi Di Savoia. The vegetation is phenomenal. On the descent, you pass by an old campsite of the Duke of Abruzzi (Bujongolo) where there is graffiti from expeditions from the early part of the 20th century.

Day 8: GUY YEOMAN TO NYABITABA HUT

The last part of the hike! Drop very steeply along the Mubuku river and join the original route near the Bujuku river up to Nyabitaka hut. Dinner and overnight at Nyabitaba Hut (2650meters).Total hiking time: 5-7 hours (dependant on some factors). Descent and covering 600 meters

Day 9: NYABITABA HUT- NYAKALENGIJA -FORT PORTAL

Today we move down to Nyakalengijja which will take approximately 2-3 hours (dependant on some factors) .Enriched with an experience of a lifetime and unforgettable memories you will say goodbye to the Mountains of the Moon.  Then we proceed to Fort Portal (a pearl within a Pearl) to check in at Mountain of the Moon Hotel. Here you can relax and reflect your hike of the highest peak in Uganda. Dinner and overnight at Mountain of the Moon Hotel.

Day 10: KAMPALA FOR A CITY TOUR

After an early breakfast, transfer to the capital Kampala. Visiting a country without visiting its capital isn’t cool at all. On this day you will get time to visit the interesting and historical sites around the capital Kampala, including the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, the Uganda Museum and of course the African Craft Village and here you will pick a gift for yourself from Winners’ Safaris. This evening you will also enjoy the culture performance at the Ndere Center. Overnight at Cassia Lodge.

Day 11 DEPARTURE

With unforgettable memories you will say goodbye and leave for Entebbe Airport for your flight. Or you might choose to enjoy the beauty of Uganda a little longer and visit other beautiful national parks.
